2026 Birthday Vacation – Day 3 – Hello, Disney World!

The cats woke up today and fixed themselves in the window. Donkeys are mesmerizing.

Traveler’s Campground was good to us again. Even that guy’s glowing trailer didn’t get in the way of our sleep.

We left Alachua mid-morning and made the drive down to Orlando. The toll roads made quick & easy work of it. We rolled into Disney’s Fort Wilderness and got our early check in on their app seconds after passing the guard station. We had a nice talk with the lady at the check in area anyway – she LOVED our cats and they’re now apparently going to be on some Animal Friends of Disney feed.

Our site is in loop right next to the ferry docks and surrounded by others with way better Halloween decorations than we’d ever imaging bringing with our travel trailer. (I’ll do a Halloween episode probably, guessing here…on Halloween.) We got everything set up just in time for the twins to hop onto their online session with their English Language Arts mentor. While they talked about essays and poetry, Tanya & I went back to the main office to coordinate some things about our stay.

The twins finished their school for the day and we shifted to some fun. (Yes, school. We’re the evil parents making the kids get their homeschool stuff done before playing at amusement parks. Well, at least some of their schoolwork. I’ll spare you the details.)

Magic Kingdom! Thanks to the sweet deal Disney has this year for veterans, we bought season passes. That’ll let us do partial-day park visits without feeling bad about getting our money’s worth instead of the super-humongo days we did last year. We took the ferry over to Magic Kingdom (it was almost a sunset cruise), made a quick stop at customer service for them to check our IDs, then dove head first into Disney.

Head first into the Tiki Room, that is. That’s long been Sophia’s favorite Disney attraction. Jose, Michael, Fritz and Pierre once again guided us through the 1960s-vintage awesomeness that is the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Pirates of the Caribbean was followed by dinner. Haunted Mansion, fireworks and (a completely empty!) It’s a Small World were next. Sophia captured some moonrise-over-Disney photos. Peter Pan finished out the night before our boat ride back to Fort Wilderness.

It was a long day, but really fun. It’s great to be here again and we’re looking forward to some serious Disneying!
